The perfect balance of the village of Okionuk, in the Far North, is disrupted by the arrival of a traveling merchant offering goods that are as surprising as they are superfluous. Since the villagers have no money to buy them, he offers to accept payment in words instead. Language quickly vanishes, and with it, thoughts, imagination, and memory. When the inhabitants are reduced to communicating only through grunts, Youma—a deaf teenager—is the only one who has retained a secret language...
"Le Village des sourds is a play that reads and sounds like a modern fairy tale. That is why, for the audiobook, we chose to have the text recorded by a single actor, Laurent Poitrenaux; he reads the play as he would a story, voicing all the characters himself. For Cap au Sud, we devised a special live recreation of this audiobook. The goal is to give it a tangible, visual presence and bring it to the stage by drawing on its sonic qualities. The performance is experienced through headphones, allowing the audience to step into the soundscape of the Far North and immerse themselves intimately in the world of Léonore Confino’s tale."
