"Chance, my faithful companion, who knows all the abbreviations and inversions better than any GPS, took me on a spring stroll to a less affluent district; a dreamy, almost village-like district in this city where I happened to be.
As chance would have it, I had to walk around a damaged streetcar. And I found myself in a square where tall trees hid a recent, elegant building, lying like a wild animal, confident and fearless.
The building was marked THEATRE
In my 40 years as a traveling musician, I've learned that theaters are great places to practice that exciting yet frightening act of getting up on stage in front of an audience.
I know that there's a heavy red curtain that drowns out the rumor of the outside world and its endless news; that there's an audience that has carefully prepared for this rendezvous and brings the most precious of possessions: their attention!
I've long aspired to spend more time than just one evening at a concert; to stay and work with the crew of one of these great, firmly anchored ships, in the heart of one of these marvelous machines, these ships of dreams.
The door was open. The people were welcoming, curious and attentive... And they offered to put down my luggage, my songs, the lyrics of my friends Philippe Djian and Martin Suter, my first synth bought in 1980, a dusty drum machine, a guitar bought straight out of a music store a stone's throw from the theater...yes, they still exist, they haven't all disappeared like the record stores. There are, of course, many stories to tell on this subject. Many stories...
And if all went well, like in a choir, the individual voice would blend into something bigger, something more human. Yes, perhaps "human" is a better word for these moments.
I'd bring my fears, my courage, my worries and my joys, to this exact address: our universe, our galaxy, the Milky Way, our solar system, planet Earth, Europe - Le Théâtre.
And here we are, you, me and chance Thank you for your time and attention."
