Location : Auditorium Charles Aznavour
Presentation
Coming into the world in those times was quite an adventure. This lecture, presented by Jacques Delenne, explores birth in past centuries in chronological order: contraception, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
Before birth and during the first months of life, the newborn was at the heart of numerous traditional customs. The lecture highlights the key figures who contributed to the development of obstetrics as a new science. Childbirth typically took place at home, surrounded by women. Through a rich slideshow, you will discover birthing virgins, the baptismal ceremony of ondoiement, the postpartum period, birth gifts, and baptism as dictated by tradition, as well as breastfeeding and wet nurses, the history of baby bottles, the Robert saga and the esteemed Dr. Dufour, rattles, and the first essential toys in a baby’s history.
Then, as the child grows, a new chapter of life begins. Jacques Delenne, a retired nurse, has long been interested in the history of healthcare through objects. As a collector, he has participated for years in numerous historical reenactments, presenting Renaissance surgery with Ambroise Paré, campaigns of the First Empire with Baron Larrey, and concluding with World War I.
