PRESENTATION

The Tourist Office of Istres has been particularly active in the reception and services provided to people with disabilities since 2008. The objective of this approach and the “Tourisme & Handicap” labelling undertaken by the Tourist Office is to offer people with disabilities the independence for which they yearn. Therefore, the Office is committed to providing reliable information and meeting the specific needs of its customers who are looking to freely and peacefully choose and enjoy their holidays.

This label guarantees the quality of the services provided by the Tourist Office and confirms its efficient reception adapted to meet the needs of people with disabilities. It is proof of the efforts undertaken by the town to improve entrances and access to public places for the past several years.

The Tourist Office of Istres is “Tourisme & Handicap” approved for the following criteria:
  • Physically disabled
  • Hearing impaired
  • Blind and visually impaired
  • Mentally disabled
Tours of the historic centre of Istres is “Tourisme & Handicap” approved for following criteria:
  • Blind and visually impaired
  • Hearing impaired
  • Mentally disabled

INVESTMENTS AND IMPROVEMENTS

As a part of this labelling, the Tourist Office has undertaken many investments and improvements.
  • An audio loop for the hearing impaired.
  • Restrooms equipped for people with different types of disabilities.
  • A system of visual symbols integrated into the different types of documents on display.
  • A voice recorder with cassettes for the blind and visually impaired.
  • An area at standard height for the physically disabled.
  • Displays and documents at a level that is within reach for the physically disabled.
  • Adapted public parking close by
  • Guided tours or tours with appropriate maps.
Also, a reception staff and advisors are trained and very mindful of people with disabilities.

DOCUMENTS AVAILABLE IN THE TOURIST OFFICE

Specific and sometimes necessary documents regarding accommodations, dining and tours of the old centre (document enabling people to independently visit the historic centre) were published using special and large-print fonts for the visually impaired.
In addition, a guide with a list of sites that are accessible to people with disabilities was also published.
Finally, a document printed in braille about the town’s major tourist attractions and events is also available to the blind and visually impaired and their guides.
